Question

Two long, straight conducting wires with linear mass density are suspended from cords so that they are each horizontal

Problem 28.79 Two long, straight conducting wires with linear mass density A are suspended from cords so that they are each horizontal, parallel to each other, and a distance d apart. The back ends of the wires are connected to one another by a slack, low-resistance connecting wire. A charged capacitor (capacitance C) is now added to the system; the positive plate of the capacitor (initial charge +Q0) s connected to the front end of one of the wires and the negative plate of the capacitor (initial charge n) is connected to the front end of the other wire (see the figure (Figure 1)). Both of these connections are also made by slack, low-resistance wires. When the connection is made, the wires are pushed aside by the repulsive force between the wires, and each wire has an initial horizontal velocity of magnitude vo. Assume that the time for the capacitor to discharge is negligible compared to the time it takes for any appreciable displacement in the position of the wires to occur. of 1 Figure 1

Explanation / Answer

initial speed v0 = uo*Q^2/(4*pi*lambda*d*R*C)

Q = charge on the capacitor plates = C*V = 2.2*10^-6*2.9*10^3 = 0.00638 C

lamda = mass per unit length

d = seperation between wires

R = resistance

vo = 4*pi*10^-7*0.00638^2/(4*pi*4.7*10^-3*0.029*4.8*10^-2*2.2*10^-6)

vo = 0.283 m/s <<<<<------answer

part B

h = vo^2/(2*g) = 0.283^2/(2*9.8) = 0.0041 m <<<--answer
