Question

Briefly explain why you can use the Calcium Separation and Quantinization procedure to determine the number of milligrams of Ca2+ ion in a food sample in which the Ca2+ ion is present in a form other than CaCO3.

(Background information: I did an experiment in lab where we all had to obtain a calcium supplement pill [an antacid] and mix it and dissolve it into 20 mL of HCl, heat it on a hotplate, decant the solution into centrifuge tubes, then centrifuge twice, and then check the solution's pH levels, filter out any solid from our solution, and transfer the solid to a piece of filter paper which we put in a drying oven and took the mass of the filter paper + solid from the calcium supplement four times.)

Explanation / Answer

I am not sure if I am understanding,

according to the procedure you are describing, you first dissolve the pill into HCl, that means that the Ca2+ went into the solution, when separated the solid and dried it you are measuring the solid reaming, that means that by weight difference you can determine the amount of Ca went into solution
