Question
A fitness coach has been asked by the principal of an elementary school to examine school children’s physical activity (in number of minutes per week) and their school grades. The data analysis result shows r = .30, p = .045, using a one-tailed test, with an alpha level of .05.
Formulate the null hypothesis and the alternative hypothesis in words and in notation. (1 for each hypothesis, 2 points total)
What is the conclusion of the hypothesis test (use wording of “reject” or “fail to reject”)? Explain how you made the decision about the test result. (1 for each question, 2 points total)
What is the effect size of this test? (1 point)
Explanation / Answer
Solution:-
Null Hypothesis HO: The population correlation coefficient is not significantly different from 0.( = 0)
Alternate Hypothesis HA: The population correlation coefficient is significantly different from 0.( 0)
Significance level = 0.05
Test statistics:-
r = 0.30
p value for test = 0.045
Since p value(0.045) is less than the significance value so we have to reject the null hypothesis.
From this we can conclude that there is a significant linear relationship(correlation) between two variables.
