Question

For this exercise, the fulcrum is placed at different points to the left of the center of gravity of the meter stick. A fixed mass of 370 grams is used to balance the meter stick so that it is in static equilibrium. Your task is to work out the position on the meter stick for the mass so that the meter stick is in static equilibrium in a horizontal position for each location of the fulcrum. Fill in the values in the table below. Note the units on the first row of the table. You do not need to enter the units for your answers. Mass of meter stick = 223 gram = 0.223 kg Fixed balanced mass = 370. gram = 0.370 kg Example of the fulcrum located off centered. Fulcrum at the 40.0 cm mark. in order to achieve static equilibrium, the 0.370 kg mass must be placed at the 34.0 cm mark.

Explanation / Answer

Calculating in the similar manner as shown:

Fulcrum Position Torque about Fulcrum Position on Meter Stick 40.0 0.219 34 35.0 0.328 26 30.0 0.437 18 25.0 0.547 10
