Question

For this discussion, start by describing the relationship between mass communication and mass media, on the one hand, and the character of the public sphere, on the other. How do you experience the relationship between public life and mass communication with respect to both traditional mass media (broadcast, mass publications, etc.) and new media (Internet, social networking, mobile communications, etc.)? If you engage the public sphere via both venues, describe and discuss the similarities and differences. Does the public sphere as you experience embody characteristics of a mass and/or of a public, as these terms are conceptualized in the module content pages and readings? How so? Or how not?

Explanation / Answer

Public sphere is part of social life where people come together to discuss on the societal problems and influence political actions.

Relationship between media communication / mass media and public sphere is that media disseminate critical opinion and also influence the acceptance of public opinion. Whatever today's media wants to present which is mostly being owned by the top business personalities and there favouritism draws the news. The same is being picked by influencial people and discussed in public space that further affects the political actions.

In old times, the media was owned by government and was presenting the actual picture to the people. However, in today's senario, the media is owned by business people like NDTV, Living media etc. So the only difference is the choice of news and the way it is presented to shape the news in which you want people to see it. However, people were dependent only newspaper and tv for news material, however you have media like internet, apps etc and hence it has reached to more people due to availabilty of internet.
