Question
A solid conductor has a hole inside. The net charge on the conduction (outer surface + inner surface) is 3 nC. There is a charge of -2 nC on the inner surface of the conductor (i.e., the surface of the hole) due to a charge in the center of the hole. What is the charge in the hole and the charge on the outer surface of the conductor?
(a.) 2 nC inside the hole and 5 nC on the outer surface.
(b.) -2 nC inside the hole and 1 nC on the outer surface.
(c.) -3 nC inside the hole and zero on the outer surface.
(d.) +3 nC inside the hole and zero on the outer surface.
(e.) -2 nC inside the hole and 5 nC on the outer surface.
Explanation / Answer
Solution:
As we know;
By the law of induction of charges;
The equal and opposite charge is induced against a test charge(charge inside the hole here).
=> charge inside the hole = 2 nC
and as to maintain the net charge of the solid conductor the outer surface will now have a charge equal to:
Q (outer) -2 nC = 3 nC
=> Q (outer) = 5 nC
Hence;
Option-A is correct
(a.) 2 nC inside the hole and 5 nC on the outer surface.
