Question

A wire on the x-axis carries a current to the left. A ring is dropped at a location where y> 0 and z is about 0. The ring is in the x-y plane and is traveling in the -y direction.

a) Specify the direction of the magnetic field from the current-carrying wire, if any, at the location of the ring.

b) Specify if the magnetic flux through the ring is increasing, decrease, or remaining constant.

c) Specify the direction of the induced magnetic field in the ring, if any.

d) Specify the direction of the induced current in the ring, if any.

The ring barely missed the wire and is now is in a location where y < 0.

e) Specify the direction of the magnetic field from the current-carrying wire, if any, at the location of the ring.

f) Specify if the magnetic flux through the ring is increasing, decrease, or remaining constant.

g) Specify the direction of the induced magnetic field in the ring, if any.

h) Specify the direction of the induced current in the ring, if any.

Explanation / Answer

a) above x axis the field will be into the x-y plane and into ring. Whereas below x axis the field will be out of page. This is using curl rule. Put your thumb in direction of current and the direction in which your fingers curl gives the direction of magnetic field.

B) flux is increasing as the magnetic field through the ring also increases as it gets closer to the wire.

C) the induced magnetic field will be out of plane of paper.

D) the direction of induced current will be in anticlockwise direction as per lenz law to oppose magnetic field.
