Question
A proton is made out of three quarks. Two up quarks, each with a charge+ 2/ 3 e , and one down quark with a charge- 1/ 3 e . (Total charge +2/3e+2/3e-1/3e=+e). Assuming the charges are at the corners of an equilateral triangle with sides of 1x10^-15m( =1fm , also called a Fermi), calculate the total electric potential energy of these three quarks. b. The neutron is made out of two down quarks and one up quark, total charge -1/3e-1/3e+2/3e=0. Calculate the total electric potential energy of these three quarks.
Explanation / Answer
electric potential energy between two charged particle E = k*q1*q2/r
q1 = q2 = charge on the particles
r = seperation betweent eh charges
a)
E = k*q1*q2/r + k*q2*q3/r + k*q1*Q3/r
E = (9*10^9*(2/3)*1.6*10^-19*(2/3)*1.6*10^-19)/(10^-15) - (9*10^9*(2/3)*1.6*10^-19*(1/3)*1.6*10^-19)/(10^-15) - (9*10^9*(2/3)*1.6*10^-19*(1/3)*1.6*10^-19)/(10^-15)
E = 0
(b)
E = k*q1*q2/r + k*q2*q3/r + k*q1*Q3/r
E = (9*10^9*(1/3)*1.6*10^-19*(1/3)*1.6*10^-19)/(10^-15) - (9*10^9*(1/3)*1.6*10^-19*(2/3)*1.6*10^-19)/(10^-15) - (9*10^9*(1/3)*1.6*10^-19*(2/3)*1.6*10^-19)/(10^-15)
E = -7.68*10^-14 J
