Question

Ma Sapling Learning macmillan learning ppose a group of volunteers is planning on building a park near a local lake. The lake is known to contain low levels of arsenic (As). Therefore, prior to starting construction, the group decides to measure the current level of arsenic in the lake. a) If a 10.1 cm3 sample of lake water is found to have 160.3 ng As, what is the concentration of arsenic in the sample in parts per billion (ppb), assuming that the density of the lake water is 1.00 g/cm3? Number ppb One of the volunteers suggests hiring an on-site water treatment company to remove the arsenic from the lake. The company claims their process takes 2.16 days to remove 37.30 kg of As from a water source. b) Calculate the total mass (in kg) of arsenic in the lake that the company will have to remove if the total volume of water in the lake is 0.310 km3 Number kg Tools c) Base take to r x 102 any's claim and the concentration of arsenic in the lake, how many years will it he arsenic from the lake, assuming that there are always 365 days in a year? Number years

Explanation / Answer

a.) mass of water = density x volume

= 1.00 x 10.1 = 10.1 g

now, ppb = (160.3 x 10-9/10.1) x 109 = 15.87 ppb

b.) volume of lake = 0.310 km3 = 0.310 x 1015 cm3

so mass of water = 1.00 x 0.310 x 1015 cm3 = 0.310 x 1015g

so, mass of arsenic = (0.310 x 1015g) x (15.87 x 10-9) = 4.9197 x 106 g = 4919.7 kg

c.) time required to remove the arsenic from the lake = (4919.7 kg/37.30kg) x 2.16 days

= 284.89 days = 0.78 years
