Question

Two of the liquids, butanone and 1-butanol, had nearly the same molecular weights, but significantly different At values. Explain the difference in t values of these substances, based on their intermolecular forces. 1. Which of the alcohols studied has: the strongest intermolecular forces of attraction? the weakest intermolecular forces? Explain using expected trends of decreasing At with increasing molar mass within a chemical series 2. Which of the ketones studied has: the strongest intermolecular forces of attraction? the weakest intermolecular forces? 3. Explain using expected trends of decreasing t with increasing molar mass within a chemical series. Explain why a swimmer feels chilled when getting out of the water during a Santa Ana wind event. (Santa Ana winds are fast moving with very low humidity) 4.

Explanation / Answer

1- Butanone and1- butanol have same molecular mass but diffrent delta T value. This is due to peresence of hydrogen bonding in butanol which is absent in butanone.

2-Propanol and ethanol has the strongest intermolecular forces and butanol and methanol has the weakest. The propanol and ethanol took longer to evaporate which means that it requires more energy to break the bond. The butanol and methanol took lesser time to evoparate than propanol and ethanol.

3-Butanone has higher moleculer attraction than acetonebecause it took longer time to hydrogen bond break.

4-The Santa Ana wind tends to have very low relative humidity (RH), often registering below 10%.It takes water from the swimmer as they exposed so they fill chilled.

5-inverse as molar mass increases temp.decreases.
