Question
Two objects with masses of m1 = 2.20 kg and m2 = 6.70 kg are connected by a light string that passes over a frictionless pulley, as in the figure below.
(a) Determine the tension in the string. (Enter the magnitude only. Due to the nature of this problem, do not use rounded intermediate values in your calculations—including answers submitted in WebAssign.)
________N
(b) Determine the acceleration of each object. (Enter the magnitude only.)
_____ m/s2
(c) Determine the distance each object will move in the first second of motion if both objects start from rest.
________m
n2Explanation / Answer
a) writing the force equations we have
m2g - T = m2a
6.7g - T = 6.7a --------(1)
T - 2.2g = 2.2a ----------(2)
adding both equations we have
a = 0.5g = 4.95 m/s2
b) T = 2.2(9.8+4.95) = 32.46 N
c) S = ut + 0.5at^2
= 0 + 0.5*4.95*1^2
= 2.48 m
