Question
A solution is prepared by dissolving 10.00 grams of a monobasic salt in a total volume of 1.0 liters. the ph of this solution was measured at 13.07 and a conductivity experiment determined that this salt was completely ionized in solution. what is the molecular weight of this monobasic salt?Explanation / Answer
if the monobasic salt was completly ionised u can work out the pOHto find the molecular mass, i.e. xOH ==> OH- + x+ so lets work it out pOH = 14-13.07 = .93 so concentration of OH is 10^(0.93) its in one litre so there will be same amount of moles, 10^0.93 since its double (same amount of moles of x i.e. xy ==>x +y) wecan just double the amount of moles of OH so 2x10^0.93 lets do mole formula n = mass/fwt 2x10^0.93 = 10g/fwt 10/(2x10^0.93) = formula weight SUCCESS!!!
