Effect of NaOH on the pH of Deionized Water: pH of freshly boiled deionized H,O pH after 1 drop of 0.10 M NaOH after 2 drops after 3 drops after 4 drops after 5 drops E. General Questions In experiments D-1 and D-3, hydrochloric acid was added one drop at a time to a buffer solution and to deionized water. Compare the changes in pH observed with cach drop of acid added to the buffer and to the deionized water. Did the buffer minimize changes in pH with each addition compared to water? If it did, explain in general terms how the buffer was able to do it. 1. 2. In experiments D-2 and D-4, sodium hydroxide was added one drop at a time to a buffer solution and to deionized water. Compare the changes in pH observed with each drop of base added to the buffer and to the deionized water. Did the buffer minimize changes in pH with each addition compared to water? If it did, explain in general terms how the buffer was able to do it.Explanation / Answer
Q4
the addition of NaOh to water will cause NaOH = Na+ +OH- ions presence
note that Oh- will increase pH, that is, it bcomes very basic
for the freshly boiiled H2O --> pH = 7, i.e .neutral
once we add some NaOH --< pH increaes drastially, i.e. up to pH = 13-14 units
when we keep adding drops, i.e. 2nd,3rd, 4th... then the pH keeps icnreasing, but not as fast as the FIRST drop
