Question
The reaction PCl5 (g) -> PCl3 (g) -> Cl2 (g) is at equilibrium
a) Suppose that some PCl3 is added, using Le Chatelier's Principle, predict which reaction, forward or reverse, would occur to bring the reaction back to equilibrium and explain thermodynamically.
b) Suppose that the volume is decreased, using Le Chatelier's Principle predict which reaction, forward or reverse, would occur to bring te reaction back to equilbrium, explain thermodynamically.
c) Suppose that the temperature is decreased (delta Ho is 87.9 kJ), using Le Chatelier's Principle, predict which reaction, forward or reverse, would occur to bring the reaction back to equilbrium, does K increase or decrease, explain thermodynamically.
Explanation / Answer
a) An increasing concentration of any of the product shifts the equlibrium towards left, thus increasing the concentration of PCl3 reverse reaction occur to bring back the reaction to equilibrium.
b) When, voulme decreases, pressure increases and equilibrium shifts in a direction where there is less number of moles. since the number of moles of reactant is les than that of product, a decrease in volume shifts the equlibrium to left (i.e.- in reverse direction)
c) A positive value of enthalpy indicates that, the reaction is endothermic in nature and for endothermic reaction when temperature is decreased the equilibrium shifts to left i.e in reverse direction.
