Question

The reaction 2ClO2(aq)+2OH^-(aq)------>ClO3^- (aq)+ClO2^- (aq)+H2O(l) was studied with the following results: Experiment [ClO2](M) [OH^-](M) Rate (M/s) 1 0.060 0.030 0.0248 2 0.020 0.030 0.00276 3 0.020 0.090 0.00828

Part A

Determine the rate law for the reaction. which of the following

Part B

Calculate the rate constant with proper units.

Express your answer using two significant figures.

Part C

Calculate the rate when [ClO2]= 0.150M and [OH?]= 4.0

1. rate=k[ClO2]2[OH?] 2. rate=k[ClO2]2[OH?]2 3. rate=k[ClO2][OH?]2 4. rate=k[OH?]

Explanation / Answer

let the order of the reaction be x when compared to OH-

so,

0.00828/0.00276=3^x

or x=1

let the reaction be of ordey y with respect to ClO-

so,

0.0248/0.00276=(0.06/0.02)^y

or y=2

so the answer is  rate=k[ClO2]2[OH?]

b) 0.0248 = k*0.06^2*0.03

or k=229.63

c)rate = 229.63*0.15^2*4*10^-2

=0.20667 M/s
