Question
The mole fraction equilibrium constant Kx=x(NO2)^2/x(N2O4) is related to Kp by the equation Kx=Kp(Ptot)^-deltaV, where delta V is the change in mole numbers of gas in the equilibrium reaction. SinceP(tot) is known (and constant) for this experiment, Kp could be determined if Kx was evaluated. Suffest a method to determine x(NO2) and x(N2O4) from the average molecular weight obtained from the relationship = (m(tot))RT/PV, where m(tot) is the mass of gas determined in this experiment and P, V, R and T have the usual meanings. (Ptot of this experiment is 101 kPa)
Explanation / Answer
Solution:
The required information is clearly stated in the questionnaire and only left out (or) missed information is on determination of nitric and nitrous oxides, in NO2 the mole of N and O is 1 in ratio while in N2O4 is 2, hence the ratio fof 1 : 2 been used for composition determination using experimental data of P,V,R,T. For example if mtotal gives 6 it comprises of nitric oxide 2 mole and nitrous oxide 4 moles which can be cross verified with excel plot using experimental data.
