Question

7. Hydrogen gas reduces NO to N2 in the following reaction: H2 (g) 2 NO (g) 2 H20 (g) N2 (g) The initial reaction rates of four mixtures of H, and NO were measured at 900 oC with the following results: Initial concentration Initial concentration Initial Rate (M/s) of NO (M) of H2 (M) 0.0248 Exp. 1 0.212 0.136 0.0991 Exp. 0.424 0.544 0.793 Exp 4 0.848 0.544 1.59 a. Find the rate la (4 points b. Find the value of the rate constant for the reaction. (2 points) c. What is the overall or of this reaction (1 point) der d. Based on the order of the disappearance of NO versus time. What would be on the y axis to give a linear gra (i.e. time is on the x axis)

Explanation / Answer

a)
see experiment 1 and 2,
[H2] is constant and [NO] doubles
rate becomes = 4 times
so, order of NO is 2

see experiment 3 and 4,
[H2] doubles and [NO] is constant
rate becomes = 2 times

so, order of H2 is 1

so, rate law is:
rate = k [NO]^2 [H2]

b)
to find the rate constant, put values from exp 1
rate = k [NO]^2 [H2]
0.0248 M/s = k (0.136 M)^2 * (0.212 M)
k = 6.32 M-2 s-1

Answer: 6.32 M-2 s-1

c)
overall order = 2+1 = 3

d)
order of NO is 2
integrated rate law for 2nd order reaction,
1/[A]o = 1/[A] - k*t
plot 1/concntration on y axis
