Augmented Reality

A combination of a real scene viewed by a user and a virtual scene generated by a computer that
augments the scene with additional information. e.g a real time simulation of flight view from
cockpit.

History

The rst appearance of Augmented Reality (AR) dates back to the 1950s whenMorton Heilig, a cinematographer, thought of cinema is an activity that would have the ability to draw the viewer into the onscreen activity by taking in allthe senses in an effective manner. In 1962, Heilig built a prototype of his vision,which he described in 1955 in “The Cinema of the Future,” named Sensorama,which predated digital computing  

Purpose :

Create a system such that a user cannot tell the difference between the real world and the virtual
augmentation of it.
To enhance a person's performance and perception of the world.
System augments the real world scene
User maintains a sense of presence in real world
Needs a mechanism to combine virtual and real worlds
Hard to register real and virtual

Pros & Cons :

Improved Training & Education is on the biggest advantages. Object Visualization, enhanced customer service
business operations and opportunities are endless. Besides helping the remote workers access customer data on-demand, the AR headsets can change the way employees work. Augmented Reality can make life easier for the consumer-facing employees, most importantly for those working in online retail.

Computer generated virtual objects must be accurately registers with the real
in all dimensions.Errors in registration prevent the real and virtual images from being seen as fused.
Registration must be maintained while the user moves around in the virtual
environment.Changes in registration can be distracting or physically disturbing.
AR systems sensitive to visual errors - virtual object may not be stationary in the
real scene or it may be in the wrong place.Mis registration of a pixel can be detected under certain conditions.Time delays lead to augmented image lagging behind motions in the real scene.

I would like to purchase Google glass.Google Glass is Google’s latest product that hails a new generation of tech gadgetry in the form of augmented reality eyeglasses.Google Glass is a wearable computer featuring a head-mounted display in the form of eyeglasses. The Google glasses function as a hands-free smartphone, letting users access the mobile internet browser, camera, maps, calendar, and other apps by voice commands.
