The article by Everett M. Rogers talks about how diffusion of innovation contributes to the understanding of adoption of new products. Diffusion research approach can be two types – monadic analysis and relational analysis. In the nomadic analysis the unit of analysis is the individual while in the relational analysis the unit of analysis is the communication relationship that exists between two individuals. The purpose of research under monadic analysis is to determine the variables related to innovativeness while the purpose of research in case of relational analysis is to determine how social-structural variables affect the flow of diffusion within a system.
There is an obvious notion of trained incapacity. This means that by being taught to see and feel innovativeness we failed to see and feel other important aspects. There was easy acceptance of revolutionary paradigms and this made it difficult to recognize as well as overcome the assumptions as well as the conceptual biases.
All in all, research on the diffusion of innovations has played a significant role on putting the social structure back on the communication process. This will give communication research a big boost and help it shed its psychological bias going forward.
