Question

Please response/comment to the follwong discussion. Response must be well thought-out and complete sentences. Do you agree or disagree and why? etc.

We are all have a purpose on this earth, and with life comes death. We don't know when the time will be or how it will occur. But we see it at some point in our lives. The passing of a loved one or friend, or working in the medical field as a CNA, Nurse, Doctor. It greatly impacts how we view individuals, how we view life and help and support those who are struggling towards the end of life as well.

I guess many can argue that if we can do this for our animals, especially if they are ill or do not have any quality of life, that we should be able to make the same decision for people as well. In my opinion, if the doctor believes that the patient can continue on living life as best as they can, then it shouldn't be legal. Doctors take the Hippocratic Oath to keep their patient alive. I don't believe Euthanasia should be legal for the sake of someone wanting to end their life because they want to unless medically necessary. (cancer, terminal illness). If they do legalize it, I believe that more people will make their own choice, and not think about how it will affect their families. As for PAS, it should only be considered if person making the decision fully understands their choice, and is not living the rest of their life like a vegetable (only the brain functioning to keep the rest of the body alive.)

A difficult decision, but ultimately I believe it depends on the situation of the person making the decision, and their quality of life.

Thank you!!!

Explanation / Answer

I am in agreement with the suggestion that euthanasia should be considered on a case to case basis. I am not advocating euthanasia for everyone who is undergoing treatment for some terminal illness or incurable diseases but if the patient is not left with any willpower to suffer through and the clinical opinion of the doctor also concurs to the incurability then the decision of the patient or the trusted caregiver should be respected. I see no merit in lingering the pain and suffering of the person and snatch away their dignity.
