Question

A popular method of teaching a motor skill is to stand next to the learner and manually guide the learner through the movement pattern. This technique, appropriately termed manual guidance, is also frequently used in a therapeutic setting. The idea of manual guidance is to move the learner through the desired pattern or range of motion so that he or she can experience the feeling associated with it. This technique presents an inherent problem. Speculate as to what the problem might be. Explain the issue. How would you suggest changing this strategy to be more effective?

Explanation / Answer

As mentioned in the question, manual guidance is a good method but of course there are some disadvantages.

The learner might end up being dependent for support. It is possible that the proximity of that of coach and the learner may differ and it may be disappointing to the learner. Also, there is a possibility that the learner's kinesthetic energy might be disturbed. It is also possible that because the teacher holds the student, the student might feel demotivated as he's not doing it himself.

Now, how can we change the strategy. We can alter the method maybe. The movement, once experienced by the student, he/she can then guide other student. Students can practice it on each other under guidance. That way, it would be fun for them too. Another alteration could be, encouraging the learner to speak out if any of the movement makes them uncomfortable. Feedback should be noted after each session.
