Question

A pool ball leaves a 0.65 - meter high table with an initial horizontal velocity of 2.4 m/s. Predict the time required for the pool ball to fall to the ground and the horizontal distance between the table's edge and the ball's landing location. Show all work. A soccer ball is kicked horizontally off a 25.0 - meter high hill and lands a distance of 40.0 meter from the edge of the ball. Determine the initial horizontal velocity of the soccer ball. Show all work. In your own words, predict the best projection angle for data table 2 and explain mathematically how you reached this conclusion. It is okay to compress the mechanism trigger even if someone is in front of the apparatus. It is not important that the gun fired from the same position each time

Explanation / Answer

1. initially ball was moving in horizontal direction . (so initial vertical v = 0)

vx = 2.4 m/s

vy = 0

in vertical ball haev to go 0.65 vertical down.

y = -0.65 m and a = -9.8 m/s^2

using y = uy*t + ay*t^2 /2

-0.65 = 0- 9.8t^2 /2

t = 0.364 s

x = vx*t = 2.4 x 0.364 =0.874 m

2) this is similar problem as 1.

initial ball was moving horizontally.

vx = v

vy = 0

y = -25 m

using y = 0 + at^2 / 2

-25 = -9.8 t^2 /2

t = sqrt(50/9.8) = 2.26 s

in horizontal,

v = x/t = 40/2.26 = 17.71 m/s
