Question

A lot contains 250 swimming pumps, Ten devices will be sampled at random and tested. If me sample contains 1 or more defects, the shipment will be returned to the supplier. If the shipment in fact contains 5 defective items, what is the probability that it will be accepted (not returned)? Show the math. If the shipment in fact contains 10 defective items, what is the probability that it will be returned? Show the math. Create probability distribution plots in Minitab showing the above scenarios, (a) and (b).

Explanation / Answer

There are total 250 swimming pool pumps in a shipment

(A)

10 pumps can be selected from the shipment in 250C10 ways.

shipment contains 5 defective items. Selection of 10 non defective items can be done in 245C10

Hence requrired probability that shipment will be accepted = 245C10/250C10 = 0.814

(B)

If shipment has 10 defective items, then probability of accepting the shipment is 240C10/250C10 = 0.6597

Hence the probability that shipment will be rejected is 1-0.6597=0.3403
