Question
A flag in the shape of a triangle is hung over the side of a building as shown below. The total weight of the flag is 230 pounds and it ha uniform density, a= 10 and b = 26. find the density of the flag. Density = pounds per square foot find the approximate weight of the slice shown in the figure if it is located h feet below the roof of the building . Use Delta or the Calcpad for Delta and express your answer in terms of weight = pounds. find the approximate work needed to lift the slice onto the roof of the building. work foot pounds. find the exact work needed to lift the entire flag onto the roof of the building work= foot pounds.Explanation / Answer
Weight = density * area
lets find the area of the slice
area= length of the strip * delta h
base of the flag which is the side of the triangle attached to the roof = sqrt(26^2-10^2)=24
length of the strip/(10-h)=24/10
length of the strip= 12(10-h)/5
Now area =12(10-h)/5 * delta h
weight = (23/12)*12(10-h)/5 *delta h
weight=(23/5)*(10-h) delta h
c) work needed to lift the slice= weight of the slice * h if we need in foot-pounds.
work needed to lift the slice=(23/5)*(10-h) * h * delta h
d) work needed to lift the entire flag we need to integrate the work in part (c) from 0 to 10 ,we get
work = integration (23/5)*(10-h) * h * dh from h=0 to 10
work = (23/5)*(5h^2-h^3/3) from h=0 to 10
work = (23/5)*(500-1000/3) = 2300/3
