Question
1. Explain the system of latitude and longitude utilizing the following terms: • North Pole • South Pole • Equator • Prime Meridian • 180° Longitude
Each of these terms lends itself to understanding this system of measurement and should be analyzed in regards to: • Its measured location • Importance of the line • Any other important information you find through research
Also include in your answer the following: • How the lines are measured or labeled • How a location on the globe is identified using latitude and longitude coordinates • All of the terms listed above
In addition to this information you will also use the website link found in the short answer instructions to locate the latitude and longitude coordinates of Buenos Aires, Argentina as well as your own personal hometown. Once these coordinates are identified explain where these locations are in reference to one another and explain their position on earth with reference to the required terms for this assignment.
Explanation / Answer
Latitude-Latitude is the parallel lines on the globe. The equator is also a latitude divide the globe into two equal halfs i.e northern hemisphere and southern hemisphere. It is measured in angle from equator towards pole in north and south direction and represented by x°N or y°S respectively. The linear difference between different latitudes increase as we move towards pole.
Longitude- It is also an imaginary line from north pole to south pole. There are many longitudes on the globe but the main one is prime meridian i.e 0°longitude. It is also measured in degrees but in east and west direction.
Grid system to find the location of any place- We know that for any position in 2D we need two axis in geometry. Similarly for find or locate any place on globe we need an intersection two direction. This requirement is fulfilled by longitude and latitude i.e where they cut they for a grid and location is denoted by x°N or S latitude and y°E or W longitude.
For example Buenos Aires is located at 34.6037°S;58.3816°W.
