The figure on the next page shows a region of central Pennsylvania (A) that includes the boundary between two different structural provinces ( the valley and ridges province to the southeast and the Plateau Province to the northwest). Englargement of the two provinces are shown in part (b) and (c) of the figures. Based on the general shape of the land surface, as indicated by the maps, answer the following :

(A) In which of the two provinces is the landscape structurally controlled ?

(B) compare the pattern of stream valleys in the Plateau Province with that depicted in the topography of the valley and ridge Province . Approximately what is the dip of the beds beneath the Plateau?

(C) in the valley and ridge Province, are the folds plunging or nonplunging ? what is you evidence ?

(D) what is the overall trend of fold hinges in the portion of the valley and ridge Province depicted in the lower map?

(E) If folds hinges trend roughly perpendicular to the direction of compression, in what direction was the compressive "push" during the development of the folds in the valley and ridges Province ? Geologists have determined that these folds formed when africa collided with eastern North America at the end of the Paleozoic Era ?

Explanation / Answer

a. The valley and ridge province is the structurally controlled landscape consisting of many anticlines and synclines. The more resistant layers like sandstone and conglomerates form ridges where as less resistant or easily erodible rocks like shale and limestone form valleys. Whereas the plateau province in the northwest is not structurally controlled as evidenced by the dendritic drainage pattern formed on the bedrock which is not structurally controlled and formed on homogeneous bed of similar lithology.

b. Trellis drainage pattern is developed in the valley and ridge province in the primary tributaries join the main stream at right angle and the secondary tributaries are parallel to the main stream. This type of drainage develops in alternatively weak and resistant units. Wheras the dendritic drainage pattern is developed in the Plateau province which are developed on horizontal and homogeneous beds. The dip of the beds beneath the plateau is roughly horizontal.

c.The folds in the valley and ridge province are plunging. These folds dip towards southeast. Where the folds are anticline they plunge in the same direction as nose and where the folds are anticlines they plunge in the direction where the limb is open.

d. The folds are almost parallel and the overall trend of the anticlines and synclines in the valley and ridge province is NE-SW.

e. The folds which are trending in the NE-SW direction are formed by the shortening of the strata or the compressive push in the NW-SE direction.
