Balancing Rations

You are consulting with a farmer who is concerned because his pigs are not gaining as rapidly as they should be. He is feeding them a diet that includes 25% timothy hay (10% crude protein), 25% corn (10% crude protein), 10% oats (11.6% crude protein), 5% vitamin and mineral supplement (0% crude protein), 5% molasses (6% crude protein), 5% soybean meal (44% crude protein, and 25% rice hulls (13% crude protein). If he is using a 100 kg diet, how many kg of protein come from the vitamin and mineral supplement?

Explanation / Answer

Answer: Is zero. If you use above diet composition, their vary in the amount of each component in the 100kg diet. There is an increase in the amount of component. But vitamins and minerals are not the protein source. This source contains 0% proteins. So If we can add an excess amount of vitamin and mineral source there is no change in the available protein content. Please check the below table SNo 4.

S.No Source of protein % of Source % of crude protein 1 timothy hay 25 10 2 Corn 25 10 3 Oats 10 11.6 4 Vitamins& Minerals 5 0 5 Molasses 5 6 6 Soybean 5 44 7 Rice hulls 25 13
