Question

You have a beach ball which has a radius of 18 cm and a mass of 0.5 kg. You have a lead ball which has the same radius but has a mass of 170 kg.

Part A

You immerse the beach ball under the water. What is the buoyancy force felt by the beach ball?

Part B

To keep the beach ball stationary under the water what is the force you need to apply? (UP is positive)

Part C

You immerse the lead ball under the water, what is the buoyancy force felt by the lead ball?

Express your answer using three significant figures.

Part D

To keep the lead ball stationary under the water what is the force you need to apply? (UP is positive)

Explanation / Answer

Part A)

FB = Vpg

FB = (4/3)(pi)(.18)3(1000)(9.8)

FB = 239 N

Part B)

The weight = .5(9.8) = 4.9 N

Thus you have to push down...

239 - 4.9 = 234.1

Since you have to push down, the force is -234.1 N

Part C)

FB = Vpg

FB = (4/3)(pi)(.18)3(1000)(9.8)

FB = 239 N

Part D)

Weight = 170(9.8) = 1666 N

Thus 1666 - 239 = 1427

So you have to push up and the force is 1427 N
