Question

You have a 3.0kg lead block at room temperature.

Find the energy required to raise the leads temperature to its melting point.

I have let room temp be 27c

melting point of lead 327c

specific heat capacity 130 J/kg c

latent heat capacity 230000 J/kg

melting point = mcdt

3*130*300 and i have

117000 or

1.2 x 10^5 J which is correct

but for the second part the answer I have is incorrect.

Find the energy required to melt the lead once its reached the melting point.(Express your answer with the appropriate units using two significant figures)

6.9 x 10^5 J which is incorrect (the mastering physics website takes this answer as wrong)

please help and please show the steps

Explanation / Answer

The latent heat of lead is 23000 J/kg

you have taken it as 230000 J /kg

So the correct answer is 23000 x 3 = 69000 K

the answer is 6.9 x 104 or 69 x 103 J
