Question

You have a 250- resistor and a 0.450-H inductor. Suppose you take the resistor and inductor and make a series circuit with a voltage source that has a voltage amplitude of 25.0 V and an angular frequency of 270 rad/s .

What is the impedance of the circuit?
What is the current amplitude?
What is the voltage amplitude across the resistor?
What is the voltage amplitudes across the inductor?
What is the phase angle of the source voltage with respect to the current?
Does the source voltage lag or lead the current?
Construct the phasor diagram.

Explanation / Answer

inductive reactance, XL = j wL = j (270 x 0.450) = j121.5 ohm

R = 250 ohm

impdedance.Z = R + jXL   (series connection)

|Z| = sqrt(250^2 + 121.5^2)   = 278 ohm ......Ans

I = V /Z = 25 / 278 = 0.09 A ......Ans

Vr = I R = 0.09 x 250 = 22.5 Volt .....Ans

VL = 121.5 x 0.09 = 10.9 volt .....Ans

phase angle, @ = tan^-1( XL / R) = 26 deg   ....Ans

voltage lead the current .
