1) a. Distance between q1 and q2 = (4+8) m = 12 m
b. Let distance of the point from q1 where electric field is zero be x towards right of q1 and to the left of q2, that is, the point lie in between the charges, because only at points in between the charges, the electric field due to the two charges will act in opposite directions to give zero net electric field.
Hence, distance of the point from q2 = (12-x)
Let the point be P. Now for zero field at P,we must have, Field at P due to q1 = Field at P due to q2
=> k.q1/x^2 = k.q2/(12-x)^2
=> (12-x)^2/x^2 = q2/q1
=> 12-x/x = ? q2/q1 => 12/x - 1 = ?q2/q1
=> 12/x = 1+ ? q2/q1 => x = 12/1 + ? q2/q1
Now, ? q2/q1 = ?9/14 = 0.80178
Therefore, x = 12/1+0.80178 = 12/1.80178 = 6.66 m
Hence the point of zero field will lie at a distance of 6.66 m to the left of q1.
c. x-coordnt tell of the point of zero field is, x = (6.66-4)
or,. x= 2.66 m.
