Question
A solid compound shaft consists of segment (1) which has a diameter of 40 mm, and segment (2). which has a diameter of 25 mm. The shaft is subjected to an axial compression load of P - 22 kN and torques TB = 725 N-m and TC = 175 N-m, which act in the directions shown. Determine the normal and shear stresses at (a) point H and (b) point K. For each point, show the stresses on a stress clement. sigma x = -15.92 MPa sigma y = 0 MPa tau xy = -43 MPa sigma x =-40.7 MPa sigma y = 0 MPa tau xy = 58.7 MPaExplanation / Answer
at H
= Tr/J = (175 - 750)*(.02)/J where J = (pi*r^4)/2 = (pi * .02^2 ) / 2
= -43.7 MPa
= -F/A = -22000 / (pi*.02^2) = -16.9 MPa
At K
= Tr/J = (175)*(.0125)/J where J = (pi*r^4)/2 = (pi * .0125^2 ) / 2
= 57.1 MPa
= -F/A = -22000 / (pi * .0125^2) = -44.8 MPa
This is how you do it, numbers are a bit off probably cause of rounding
