The hatch leading to the bridge has a wheel mechanism to secure it (see picture in the assignment folder). To open the hatch, she grabs hold of the wheel, with her hands on opposite sides, and rotates the wheel by exerting a force toward the top of the door on one side, while exerting the same force towards the bottom of the door on the opposite side. Is there a net force applied on the wheel? Is there a net torque applied? Explain how you know.

Explanation / Answer

since the force applied at the two ends are equal and opposite , the net force is zero

But there is a net torque since both the forces produce the torque in the same sense, hence gets added to produce a net torque
