Question
A ladder of mass 30kg and length 8 m. leans against a frictionless wall. The angle between the ladder and the wall is 37 degree. a) What is the force between the ladder and the wall. b) A 60 kg man now climbs up 1m the mid point of the ladder. What is the force at the base of the ladder, expressed as a horizontal component and a vertical component? (Also, what is the (magnitude and direction of this force?) c) What must be the coefficient of friction so that the man can climb all the way to top of the ladder, without it slipping.Explanation / Answer
a) N2*L*sin37 = Wl*L/2*cos37
N2 = Wl/2tan37 = (30*9.8)/(2*tan37)= 195.07 N
b) F = (Wl+Wm) = (30+60)*9.8 = 882 N
c) F*u*L*sin37 = (Wl*L/2*cos37)+(Wm*L/2*cos37)
882*u*sin37 = (30*9.8*0.5*cos37)+(60*9.8*0.5*cos37)
u = 0.663
