Question

Both Problems please!

A wave machine is connected to a generator set to 8.00 Hz, resulting in a wavelength of 25.0 cm. Each rod reaches a maximum distance of 10.0 cm from its equilibrium position. (a) What is the wave speed? (b) How long does it take a rod to complete one cycle of its SHM? (c) How long does it take the wave shape to travel 25.0 cm? (d) What is the wave speed when the frequency is doubled? What is the wavelength when the frequency is doubled? When a desert beetle makes a sudden move, it produces two waves on the surface of the sand. These waves can be detected by a nearby sand scorpion, which uses the waves to locate its prey, the desert beetle. One wave travels at 50 m/s and the other wave travels at 150 m/s. Both waves start at the desert beetle and end at the sand scorpion; so both waves travel the same distance, d, the distance between beetle and scorpion. If the 50 m/s wave arrives 4.00 times 10^-3 s after the 150 m/s wave, find d.

Explanation / Answer

f=8Hz,

lambda=25cm

maximum distance, d=10cm

a)

wave speed, v=lambda*f

v=0.25*8

v=2 m/sec

b)

T=1/f

T=1/8

T=0.125 sec

c)

here, the wave shape travel 25cm which is equals to lambda

therefore,

T=0.125 sec

d)

v=lambda*f

v=0.25*(2*8)

v=4 m/sec

and

lambda=v/f

=2/(2*8)

=0.125 m

=12.5 cm
