Question

Use the exact values you enter to make later calculations. A ray of light strikes a flat, 2.00-cm-thick block of glass (n 1.32) at an angle of 0 38.0° with respect to the normal (see figure below). 2.00 cm (a) Find the angle of refraction at the top surface and the angle of incidence at the bottom surface. 28.79 x Your response is within 10% of the correct value. This may be due to roundoff error, or you could have a mistake in your calculation. Carry out all intermediate results to at least four-digit accuracy to minimize roundoff error (b) Find the refracted angle at the bottom surface. 3947 Your response is within 10% of the correct value. This may be due to roundoff error, or you could have a mistake in your calculation. Canry out all intermediate results to at least four-digit accuracy to minimize roundoff error (c) Find the lateral distance d by which the light beam is shifted. 0,365 Your response is within 10% of the correct value. This may be due to roundoff error, or you could have a mistake in your calculation. Carry out a intermediate results to at least four-digit accuracy to minimize roundoff error cm (d) Calculate the speed of light in the glass. 2.273 e8 v m/s (e) Calculate the time required for the light to pass through the glass block. 7.71e-11 Your response differs from the correct answer by more than 10%. Double check your calculations. s (f) Is the travel time through the block affected by the angle of incidence? O No O Yes, a slightly larger angle will decrease the travel time. O Yes, a slightly larger angle will increase the travel time.

Explanation / Answer

a) we know that

n1sin1 = n2sin2

From this we have angle of refraction

2 = sin-1 ( 1.00 sin 38 / 1.32)

= 27.8 degree

b) angle of incidence at the bottom surface is 3= 2 = 27.8 degree

The angle of refraction is

4 = sin-1 ( 1.32 sin 27.8 / 1.00)

= 38 degree

c) The lateral distance

d = h sin

= ( L / cos2) sin ( 1 -2)

= ( 2.00 / cos(27.8)) * sin ( 38 - 27.8)

= 0.4004 cm

d) v = c / n2 = 3*108 / 1.32 = 2.273*108 m/s

e) t = h / v = L / v cos2

= 0.02 /2.273*108 cos(27.8)

= 7.784*10-11 s

f ) A Slightly Larger Anglewill Increase The Travel Time
