Question

A car comes to a bridge during a storm and finds the bridge washed out. The driver must get to the other side, so he decides to try leaping it with his car. The side the car is on is 22.2 m above the river, whereas the opposite side is a mere 2.1 m above the river. The river itself is a raging torrent 55.0 m wide.

1-How fast should the car be traveling just as it leaves the cliff in order to just clear the river and land safely on the opposite side

v0=         m/s

2-What is the speed of the car just before it lands safely on the other side?

v=     m/s

Explanation / Answer

A) apply s= ut+0.5*a*t^2 in verticle direction

=> 20.1 = 4.9*t^2

=> t = sqrt(20.1/4.9) = 2.025 sec

apply speed = distance/time in horizontal direction

=> speed = 55/2.025 = 27.16 m/s Answer

B) verticle speed = a*t = 9.8*2.025 = 19.845

horizontal speed = 27.16

so speed = sqrt(27.16*27.16 + 19.845*19.845) = 33.637 m/s Answer
