Question

A car (mass = 85 sl) is travelling at 73 ft/s when it collides head-on with a sport utility vehicle (mass = 167 sl) travelling in the opposite direction. In the collision, the two vehicles come to a halt. At what speed was the sport utility vehicle travelling? In a football game, a receiver is standing still, having just caught a pass. Before he can move, a tackler, running at a velocity of +3.5 m/s, grabs him. The tackler holds onto the receiver, and the two move off together with a velocity of +2.1 m/s. The mass of the tackler is 94 kg. Assuming that momentum is conserved, what is the mass of the receiver?

Explanation / Answer

1)
As after collision both the vehicles come to stop,
Therefore Final Momentum = 0
Using Momentum Conservation,
Initial Momentum = Final Momentum
m1*v1 + m2*v2 = 0
85 * 73 + 167 * v2 = 0
v2 =  - 37.2 ft/s

p.s :- -ve sign signifies the direction i.e opposite to the motion of car 1.

2)
Using Momentum Conservation,
Initial Momentum = Final Momentum
94 * 3.5 + 0 = (94 + m) * 2.1
m = 62.7 Kg
Mass of the reciver, m = 62.7 Kg
