Question

A uniform electric field exists in the region between two oppositely charged parallel plates 1.58 cm apart. A proton is released from rest at the surface of the positively charged plate and strikes the surface of the opposite plate in a time interval 1.48×106 s .

A) Find the magnitude of the electric field.

Use 1.60×1019 C for the magnitude of the charge on an electron and 1.67×1027 kg for the mass of a proton.

B) Find the speed of the proton at the moment it strikes the negatively charged plate.

Please answer the question completely, and with neat/ easy to follow work steps, I really need to understand how the solution is found

Explanation / Answer

a) Find acceleration using s = ut + (1/2)at^2
0.0158 = 0 + (1/2)a x 1.48×106^2
a = 1.4426x10^10 m/s^2

Find the force using F = ma
F = 1.67×1027 x 1.4426x10^10
= 2.409x10-17N

Find the electric field using E = F/Q
E = 2.409x10-17 / 1.60x10^-19
=150.578V/m
= 1.50x10^2 V/m to 3 sig figs. (or you can use units of N/C)

b) v = u+at
= 0 + 1.4426x10^10 x1.48×10-6
= 2.135x10^4 m/s
