Question

The eloctron tansport PROCESS: ELECTRON TRANSPORT CHAIN Comples NADH FADH2 Part 3. This illustration is of the ETS system. Notice the yellow balls with the labels O and Cyt c. These are carrier proteins, Coenzymes that carry shuttle electrons between the complexes. Q.which stands for CoEn- zyme Q10, or Ubiquinone/Ubiquinol accepts pairs of electrons at a time from complexes I and II and deliv ers to complex II Cytochrome C accepts from complex III and delivers to complex IV. Recall that there has to be continuous flow of electrons across the ETS chains to maximize this ATP energy yield. What would happen if you blocked this path? If you disabled complex IV for example on ATP synthesis and oxygen consumption

Explanation / Answer

This blocking of complex Iv stops the flow of electrons from the cytochrome oxidase to oxygen. Without oxygen, the cell will not be able to make ATP aerobically.

There will be no chemiosmotic gradient maintained. hence, the chain will halt.

There will be no ATP synthesis and no transferring of electrons to oxygen.
