Question

An object 2.50 cm high is placed 3.00 cm in front of a concave mirror of focal length 8.00 cm. It is a good idea to use a ray diagram to answer the first questions. You might also do the calculation to see that it is consistent with your drawing.

You will have ONE SUBMISSION ONLY for the first two questions.
(a) The image will be  ---Select--- virtual. real.
(b) The image will be  ---Select--- inverted. upright.

You will have FIVE SUBMISSIONS for the remaining parts.
(c) Calculate the image distance, s'.
_______________cm
(d) Calculate the magnification, m.

(e) Calculate the height of the image. Enter your answer as a POSITIVE number.
_____________________ cm

Explanation / Answer

Given that focal length f = 8 cm

object distance is u = 3 cm

height of the object is ho = 2.5 cm

A) Virtual

B) upright

C) f = -8 cm

u = -3 cm

apply mirror eqaution

1/f = 1/u + 1/v

1/v = 1/f-1/u

v = (u*f)/(u-f) = (8*3)/(-3+8) = 4.8 cm

D) magnification m = -v/u = -4.8/-3 = 1.6

e) m = hi/ho

height of the image is hi = m*ho=1.6*2.5 = 4 cm
