Question

Liquid nitrogen has a density of 0.808 g/mL and bolls at 77 K Researchers often purchase liquid nitrogen in insulated 165L tanks. The liquid vaporizes quickly to gaseous nitrogen (which has a density of 1.15 g/L at room temperature and atmospheric pressure) when the liquid is removed from the tank. Suppose that all 165 L of liquid nitrogen in a tank accidentlally vaporized in a lab that measured 12.00 m X 12.00 m X 3.50 m Part A What maximum fraction of the air in the room could be displaced by the gaseous nitrogen?

Explanation / Answer

Volume of room:

12000 * 12000 * 3500 = 5.04x1011 cm3 or mL

Volume of gas:

165 L * 808 g/L = 1.3332x105 g

Vgas = 1.3332x105 / 1.15 * 1000 = 1.1593x108 cm3

Vgas/Vroom = 1.1593x108 / 5.04x1011 = 2.3x10-4

Hope this helps
