Question

Give approximate values tor the indicated bond angles in the molecule shown. Express the bonding angles in degrees to four significant digits separated by a comma. Give approximate values for the indicated bond angles in the molecule shown. Express the bonding angles in degrees to four significant digits separated by a comma. Give approximate values tor the indicated bond angles in the molecule shown. Express the bonding angles in degrees to four significant digits separated by a comma. Give approximate values for the indicated bond angles n the molecule shown. Express the bonding angles in degrees to four significant digits separated by a comma.

Explanation / Answer

Bond angle depends on hybridisation and electronegetivity of central atom and presence of lone pairs of electrons.

Part A:

The given molecule is nitrous acid (HON=O), The first bond angle asked is (1)110.50 and second is (2) 100.90,

The central oxygen is in a sp3 hybridisation in first case, the central nitrogen atom is in a sp2 hybridisation but because of elecronegetivity of nitrogen bond angle is reduced from normal bond angle of 1200 to 100.90.

Part B: Acetaldehyde ,Bond angle (3) = central carbon atom is in a sp3 hybridisation state ,therefore bond angle must be 109.50, (4) central carbon atom here is in SP2 Hybridisation state therefore bond angle is 1200.

Part c: Hydroxyl amine, bond angle for (5) is 1070, the central N atom is in SP3 hybridisation state & which is electronegetive , therefore, bond angle reduces from 109.5 to 1070. bond angle for (6) is 101.40 because of central elecronegative oxygen and which has two lone pairs, lone pair repulsion reduces the bond angle.

Part D: bond angle in acetonitrile

the bond angle for (7) is normal bond angle of sp3 hybridisation 109.50, and for (8) is 1800,the central carbon atom is in a sp hybridisation state.
