Consider a 2.0 kg piece of nickel; the density of nickel is 8.66 g/mL and the specific heat of nickel is 0.44 J/g. degree C. Assume that only P-V work is done, and that there is a constant external pressure of 1.00 atm. If the piece of nickel loses heat to the surroundings, and there is no change in the internal energy of the nickel piece: Is work done by the nickel piece on the surroundings, work done on the nickel piece by the surroundings, no work is done, or cannot be determined? Justify your choice. Is the change in volume of the nickel piece a positive number , a negative number, no change, or cannot be determined? Justify your choice.

Explanation / Answer

a) dU = dQ + dW , Given that dU = 0 i.e no change in internal energy

hence dQ = -dW hence dW = -dQ

when Nickel loses heat it means that dQ = -ve

hence dW = -(-ve) = +Ve

hence +ve work which corresponds that work is done on the Nickel by surroundings ( i.e compression work) .

b) Change in volume of Nickel is -ve number since

change in vol = final volume -initial volume and for compression final volume < initial volume

hence change in vl = -Ve
