Question
Okay -- so here's an "unusual" ethics dilemma for you and it's a fitting conclusion to the last chapter in the textbook. Why? Because it illustrates that questions of ethics can pop up in the most ordinary of places. Suppose that you went to a popular shopping area where parking was extremely limited and the store owner had instituted "customers only" parking and you were lucky enough to find an open space. Then suppose that once you finished your business in that store -- having spent a fair amount of money -- you had other shopping to do in the same vicinity so your left your car in that same "customer only" parking space. You believed that what you did was okay since you "paid" for that spot with your purchase. But your significant other disagreed saying that you had finished your business at that store, your car should be moved.
Explanation / Answer
It is indeed an ‘unusual’ ethics dilemma for me and makes me realize indeed that ethics can pop us in the most ordinary of places as well. In the above case, to be absolutely ethically speaking, it is indeed wrong to seek an undue advantage of the already congested parking space simply because I have ‘paid a significant amount’ for availing the items from the Store. The same space could be rather utilized otherwise by the new or potential customers who may intend to go and shop from the Store as well. That opportunity gets lessened for the store-keeper to avail when I unduly leave my car in the same “customer only” parking space.
