Question
Ok... I thought I had it down, but I don't. SO...A bus traveled 387 km in 5h. One hour of the trip was in city traffic. The bus's city speed was half of its speed on open highway. The rest of the trip was on open highway. Find the bus's city speed.
r x 5 = 387 -Rate x 5hrs = 387km
4r + .5r = 387 -4hr x rate + 1/2 rate times 1hr = 387km 4.5r = 387 - 4 1/2 hr x rate = 387km r = 86 - rate = 86kmph
? - Confusion!
Please help! I know I'm not transferring it right. What is the right equation?
(Soon as I start cruising They throw in a twist. Grr.)
4r + .5r = 387 -4hr x rate + 1/2 rate times 1hr = 387km 4.5r = 387 - 4 1/2 hr x rate = 387km r = 86 - rate = 86kmph
Explanation / Answer
If D = rt, then r = D/t and t = D/r so if the bus's city speed was 1/2 of its highway speed and that was an hr out of the 5hr trip then the rate or speed of the bus in relationship to the time and distance would be as follows. 387 = 5(4.5r) 387/5 = 4.5r 77.4 = 4.5r 77.4/4.5 = r 17.2 = r; which is the highway speed of the bus, take half of that to get city speed 17.2/2 = 8.6km/hr is the city speed
