Question
C. Was the tetracosane a pure substance?
The presence of two compounds in a mixture will result in the melting point of each compound being affected. Each compound acts as an impurity as far as the other compound is concerned. The melting point of the mixture will be broad and below the melting point of either pure compound. If the two compounds in the mixture you prepared were both tetracosane, what would the mixture melting point have been? What can you conclude from the melting point of the mixture???
Explanation / Answer
Melting point would be the same as of pure tetracosane if both are prepared homogenously or exactly the same. If we find any deviation from standard melting point then we could conclude one of the component is not pure tetracosane.
