Question
Glucose (C6H12O6) can be broken down into ethyl alcohol (C2H5OH) and carbon dioxide gas (CO2) according to the following balanced chemical equation:
C6H12O6(aq) ? 2 C2H5OH(aq) + 2 CO2(g)
Calculate the mass of each product if 45.50 g of glucose decomposes completely. The molar masses of all three substances have been provided below to help expedite your calculations.
Mm C6H12O6 = 180.16 g/mol
Mm C2H5OH = 46.07 g/mol
Mm CO2 = 44.01 g/mol
_____ grams of C2H5OH will be produced upon the complete decomposition of 45.50 g C6H12O6.
_____ grams of CO2 will be produced upon the complete decomposition of 45.50 g C6H12O6.
Explanation / Answer
Mass of glucose = 45.5g
No of moles of glucose = 45.5/180.16= 0.2525 gmol
From above balanced equation
1 mol glucose decompose will give 1 mol ethanol and 2mol CO2
0.2525 moles glucose will produce 0.2525 moles ethanol and 0.5050 (2*0.2525) moles CO2
So
grams of ethanol produced = 0.2525×46.07= 11.633g
grams of CO2 produced. = 0.5050×44.01= 22.23g
