Question
I am trying to answer a bunch of lab questions about a lab I didand am stuck on finding the morality of the diluted vinegarsolution? Can anyone help me? (I hope I gave enough info)Here where the lab procedures that I already went through:
Transfer 10mls (Vc)of vinegar to a 100mL volumetric flask (Vd).Fill the volumetric flask to the line with water. Using a pipet, transfer 10mLs of the diluted vinegar solution to a 125mLvolumetric flask. Add 25mLs of distilled water and 2 drops ofphenolphthalein indicator solution. Obtain a buret and fill it with50mLs of sodium hydroxide
When the solution turns from colorless to pink, record how much (bydifference) NaOH was added. (This occurred at 26.10 mLs)
Here are the steps that I am given to help solve my Homework:
-Using the morality of NaOH determined above (This was the firstpart of the Homework and I already determined that the Morality ofNaOH was 31.90 mLs or .0319 L) and the volume of NaOH used, findthe moles of NaOH. (I took .02610/.0307=.85016)
-Convert the moles of NaOH to moles of acetic acid using thebalanced equation. (The moles should be the same for both.85016)
-Divide the moles of acetic acid by the volume of solution thatcontained those moles of acetic acid. (This is where I amstuck)
-Use the dilution formula to find the concentrated morality ofacetic acid in vinegar.
Explanation / Answer
Using a pipet, transfer 10mLs of the diluted vinegar solution to a125mL volumetric flask. Add 25mLs of distilled water and 2 drops ofphenolphthalein indicator solution. => The volume of the flask containingacetic acid & water is 10mLs + 25mLs =35mLs The volume of solution that contained those moles of acetic acid isthe volume above plus the volume of NaOHused. (the final solution in the volumetric flask contains dilutedvinegar solution, distilled water and sodium hydroxide;phenolphthalein is not counted). So you just need to add the volume of NaOH with 35mLs, you willhave the answer for the part where you're stuck. And hopefully, you know how to do the last question using dilutionformula to find the concentrated morality of acetic acid invinegar. (you already have the finalconcentration of acetic acid which was from the previous question, you can use the formula M1V1 =M2V2 to find the initialconcentration) I'm trying to show you the way to do it. So if you still don't getit, PM me.
