Question

A concentration of 800 ppm by volume of CO is considered lethal to humans. Calculate the minimum mass of CO in grams that would become a lethal concentration in a closed room 17.6 m long, 8.80 m wide, and 2.64 m high. The temperature and pressure are 20.0 C and 756 mmHg respectively.

Explanation / Answer

800 ppm by vol means 800 m3 of CO in 1000000m3 of (air minus CO) Volume of (air+CO) = 17.6*8.80*2.64 m3 = 408.8832m3 Let Volume of CO = V m^3 Then, Volume of (air minus CO) = 408.88-V So, we have [(408.33-V)/1000000]*800 m3 CO So, V = (408.33-V)*800/1000000 (10000/8)V = 408.33-V ==> V=408.33/1251 = 0.326m3 = 326 L Now, use PV=nRT to find the no. of moles n, and multiply by28(mol.mass of CO) to get mass of CO in grams n = PV/RT = (756/760 atm)*326 L/((0.082)(293 K)) = 13.49 mol So, m = 28*n = 28*13.49 g = 377.7 g CO Thats the method, check my calculation forany errors
